“This Training reminded me that teaching is an art itself: always changing, improving, and inventing. It reminded me why I decided to become a teacher in the first place.”

How can educators and teaching artists use elements of theatre to ignite active learning?

Stimulate your own intellect and creativity while leveraging elements of theatre in the context of culturally responsive teaching practice.

Theatrical Teaching Institute (TTI) is a six-day course for educators and teaching artists. Explore Roundabout’s Theatrical Teaching Framework, a pedagogical lens that centers learners as artists to leverage their skills as theatre makers and celebrate the process of collaborative creation. Engage in workshops and activities to apply theatrical elements—theme, plot, spectacle, character, and more—to academic content, lesson structure, classroom setting, and teaching presence.

The pedagogical strategies explored in the institute encourage educators to:

  • Use theatre to activate student learning
  • Apply new teaching strategies to connect to classroom curricula
  • Explore personal creativity
  • Promote culturally responsive teaching through theatre
  • Connect with fellow educators and Roundabout teaching artists

A typical day runs for 9:30 am - 5:00 pm and includes workshops focused on Roundabout's Theatrical Teaching Framework and creative exploration and theatre making (lunch is not included).

Theatrical Teaching Institute will resume on SUNDAY, JULY 28 – FRIDAY, AUGUST 2, 2024

“Roundabout’s TTI provides a fresh approach to teaching—regardless of subject area—that can elevate not just content delivery, but long-lasting experiences for students.”

— Jim Brannigan, Smithtown High School English Teacher

"This institute has elevated my perception of theatre in the classroom. I've been given practical, rich, tangible ways to enhance and deepen student understanding of concepts and content. The application of Common Core Standards…was extremely evident in every piece of this week. Thank you."

— Erica Corlito, PS214 Theatre Arts Teacher
