Student Production Workshop

What’s it all about?

Student Production Workshop is a student-run theatre company made up of NYC Public High School students. Each student takes on a role found in a professional theatre company, such as artistic director, managing director, production director, technical director, actor, set designer, sound designer, etc. While mentored by education staff, the students are solely responsible for all artistic and managerial decisions. The participants are offered an opportunity and safe environment to create art that interests and excites them.

What’s happening now?

Our student artistic director, managing director, stage manager, technical director and playwright positions have been chosen. Our student playwright is hard at work on the script in preparation for an invited play reading in May. A play reading is like a performance in that it is for an audience, but it is not a full-fledged production with costumes, sound, lights, etc. After the reading, the playwright will make revisions to the play. After that, a second round of auditions will happen and SPW will go into rehearsals for the final production that will take place in August in the Black Box Theatre at Roundabout Theatre Company.
