Pacific Overtures' Cast & Crew
Reach Out to Aid Tsunami Victims

When the cast and crew of Pacific Overtures learned of the devastating tsunami that hit South Asia last December, they jumped into action. Curtain speeches by Pacific Overtures star B.D. Wong highlighted how much it meant for this all-Asian cast to contribute to the recovery efforts, and audience members responded generously. Cast and crew alike volunteered to help collect funds at the end of each show, and autographed posters and exclusive behind-the-scenes calendars were sold as well.

Thanks to the efforts of the entire company, close to $33,000 was raised during the final two weeks of performances. The funds were donated to three esteemed relief organizations: the American Red Cross, Unicef, and Doctors Without Borders. Rosemary Mackey, Chief Business and Fund Development Officer of the American Red Cross in Greater New York, praised the endeavor, saying, “In the grand tradition of the American theater community, the entire cast and crew of Pacific Overtures have given so much of themselves in the collecting these funds [for] victims of the tsunami in South Asia. We are very appreciative of this effort and look forward to continuing a relationship with the Roundabout Theatre Company as part of the Red Cross family.” All of us here at Roundabout join in saluting this wonderful cast and crew for their dedication and commitment.

Megan Kirkpatrick

Smart Moves
Roundabout Announces Education Department Changes

When Megan Kirkpatrick began working at Roundabout five years ago, the education department was a much smaller operation. For one, there were no New York City high schools that the company was responsible for. An integral part of the department's growth, Kirkpatrick, former Director of Educational Programming, was recently named the new Education Director. “I am thrilled by the opportunity to lead Roundabout's education department,” says Kirkpatrick. “We have experienced quite a growth spurt in the last two years in the opening of three small schools and I look forward to deepening these relationships and increasing our impact on student learning.”

“Megan has been an influential player in building Roundabout's work in our City's schools from a fledgling program to become one of the most respected and effective arts education programs in our area,” reported Executive Director, Julia Levy. “As Education Director, Megan will oversee all aspects of the administration of our education efforts.”

Reneé Flemings

Fortunately, Kirkpatrick will have a strong support team, starting with Reneé Flemings, Roundabout's Senior Curriculum Advisor, who has been promoted to Director of Instruction and Curriculum Development. “In Reneé's eight years with the company, she has developed a rigorous teaching artist training program that has ensured the effectiveness of our work with teachers and their students. Reneé will continue to supervise Roundabout's extraordinary staff of teaching artists and to create and implement theatrical teaching curricula while taking on a larger role in refining the creative mission of Roundabout's Education Department,” says Levy.

Kirkpatrick and Flemings both relish furthering the work of former department heads, Margie Salvante, now principal at Manhattan Theatre Lab High School, and Arlene Jordan, Roundabout's last Education Director. And though still in the planning stage, they have several groundbreaking projects in the works. “It is with excitement the staff and I move forward in laying the groundwork for new initiatives,” says Kirkpatrick, “that will help us bring our professional development work to new audiences and bring our students to Broadway to present their productions.”
