Green Features

Indoor Environmental Quality

  • HVAC system filters out 95% of particulate matter with MERV 15 filtration media CO2 sensors installed throughout the theatre, and all occupied spaces receive over 30% more fresh air than required by current ASHRAE standards
  • Paints, concrete sealants, and the adhesives used in carpentry and carpeting are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), meeting the applicable Green Seal Standard and South Coast Air Quality Management District Rule
  • All carpeting meets the Carpet and Rug Institute's Green Label Plus requirements, meaning the carpet, cushions and adhesives meet the extremely low thresholds set for emissions of VOCs
  • Wood composite products, such as plywood and MDF, meet standards for low VOCs, and contain no added urea-formaldehyde resins, which would commonly be used in such products
  • All furniture in the offices and back-of-house spaces is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified
  • Strict construction procedures prevented dust and debris from entering the theatre's ductwork system
  • Materials

  • Over 75% of project waste from demolition, land clearing and construction diverted from landfill
  • Blast furnace slag, a byproduct of the steel industry, replaces approx. 45% of the cement in the structural concrete, significantly reducing the amount of CO2 being released into the atmosphere
  • Wood-composite products used in millwork, such as MDF and plywood, are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, meaning the wood has been sourced from a sustainably-managed forest
  • Paperstone, used for wall panels and baseboards, is made from compressed recycled paper and is FSC certified Solid wood and wood veneers are FSC-certified. A native North American cherry was selected for veneered wall panels, handrails, wood trim and the auditorium ceiling; auditorium seating also uses a North American cherry veneer
  • Bamboo, a rapidly renewable material, used as veneer for paneling on mezzanine fronts in the auditorium and orchestra bar Sheetrock/gypsum wall board has high recycled content and mineral fiber acoustic ceiling tile is used throughout
  • Marble used for flooring and countertops and shelves, as well as granite used on exterior and door saddles, was quarried in Vermont, within a 500-mile radius of New York City, reducing the amount of energy associated with transportation
  • Carpeting used throughout the lobbies areas is 100% wool
  • Fabric selected for auditorium seating upholstery is 100% recycled polyester, and is fully recyclable. Drapery fabric is over 50% wool, a rapidly renewable resource
  • Water Conservation

  • Waterless urinals help reduce potable water consumption by a total of 34%; first installation of waterless urinals in a publicly-accessible New York City building
  • Wastewater from sinks and back of house areas is directed to the gray water system in the adjacent tower and reused for flushing toilets, further reducing water consumption and reducing strain on the city's sewage treatment system
  • Energy Efficiency

  • All applicable equipment and appliances within the theatre are Energy Star rated
  • All equipment and systems will be fully commissioned, a critical part of the construction process that ensures equipment and systems are functioning at the level of efficiency for which they were designed
