For Students

What is Roundabout Youth Ensemble?

Roundabout Theatre Company’s after school program, Roundabout Youth Ensemble (RYE, formerly Student Production Workshop), is a student-led theatre company modeled after Roundabout’s professional theatre production process.

SUMMER: RYE leaders hold open auditions for student actors and interview student designers for the summer production. Once the company is selected, they embark on a seven week student-led production process, culminating in four public performances on August 12 and 13. This year the company will be working a production called Smaller This Year written by Anastasia West and William Reymann. In the perfect suburb, in perfect house, on a perfect street lives a less than perfect family: The Missturrs. In this small town, not everything is bumblebees and cherry trees, because each member of the Missturr family has developed a nasty fondness for the ‘ol casual Sunday murder. When bodies start to pile up, a less-than-functional detective starts to look for answers. How long can they keep tap dancing on graves until their violent pastime catches up to them? Smaller This Year asks telling questions about family, social apathy and the romanticization of violence, while serving up a darkly comedic delve into psychosis. Auditions will take place on June 7, 8, 11 and 12 from 4:30pm7:00pm. Join us!
FALL: Interviews and auditions to become a member of the RYE ensemble. Students will be placed into a theatrical track for the school year. These tracks are performance, tech/design, and playwriting. Throughout the fall each track will meet once a week to learn about their discipline through workshops and hands-on projects. Once a month the ensemble will come together to see a Roundabout production and meet with professional artists.

WINTER: The ensemble will continue to meet on a weekly basis working towards producing a showcase where playwrights, designers, and performers can share the work they’ve been doing. The group will see each of Roundabout’s winter productions.

SPRING: Interviews for RYE leaders will take place. Three plays will be expanded and produced by the RYE ensemble as staged readings in Roundabout’s Black Box Theatre—the final school-year event for the ensemble.
