Having trained at the Stella Adler Academy, Ruffalo first gained attention starring in the off-Broadway production of <em>This is Our Youth<\/em>, for which he won a Lucille Award for \u2018Best Actor.\u2019 His theatre credits include his Tony Award-nominated Broadway debut in the Lincoln Center Theater\u2019s revival of Clifford Odets\u2019 <em>Awake and Sing!<\/em>, the Off-Broadway production <em>The Moment When<\/em>, and<em> Avenue A<\/em> at The Cast Theater. In 2000, he directed Timothy McNeil\u2019s original play <em>Margaret <\/em>at the Hudson Backstage Theatre in Los Angeles.
