This 1955 comedy-drama—planned for Broadway but canceled when the playwright wouldn’t tone down its message—makes a triumphant premiere at last, and as The Wall Street Journal says, “The results are glorious to behold.” Follow an experienced Black stage actress through rehearsals of a major Broadway production in Alice Childress's funny, moving, and ultimately shattering look at racism, identity, and ego in the high-stakes world of New York theatre.
Tony Award winner LaChanze (The Color Purple), Michael Zegen (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper (The Life) lead a knockout cast in this “masterpiece of astonishing power” (Helen Shaw, New York Magazine). As Linda Armstrong in the New York Amsterdam News says, Trouble in Mind is “a monumental work, whose time has finally come.”
Running time: 2 hours and 10 minutes, including one 15-minute intermission.
