Dear friend,

Welcome to the world premiere of York Walker’s Covenant in the Black Box Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center. This production is part of the Roundabout Underground, our space for launching the work of essential theatrical voices and building tomorrow’s canon for a new generation. Covenant is one of three world premieres on Roundabout stages this fall, as part of the last season curated by our longtime leader and my dear friend, the late Todd Haimes, and the first I’m presenting to you as Interim Artistic Director.

The world of Covenant is one of private pains, private loves, and shame that runs deep. Everyone in this small town is hiding something, and, as Ruthie reveals in her opening monologue, “no matter what you do/ No matter how hard you try/ This secret.../ Ends up destroyin’ the one person/ You love more than life itself.” Whomever one chooses to worship, secrecy and unwavering faith can be a dangerous combination.

Each play we produce in the Underground represents the writer’s Roundabout and New York debut, and we are so excited to share York Walker’s chilling play with our audiences. We are also thrilled to welcome director Tiffany Nichole Greene, and to welcome this spectacular cast, all of whom are making their Roundabout debuts.

Thank you for joining us at Covenant. I ask you to share your thoughts on this production and our whole season by emailing me at ArtisticOffice@roundabouttheatre.org.

Sincerely,
Scott Ellis
Interim Artistic Director
