What shows will I be the assistant director on if I am the Fellow? Do I have a choice?

We want to make sure the Fellow has the opportunity to assist in a variety of spaces and with a range of directors. To that end, we can assure that the Directing Fellow will work in at least two different Roundabout theatres and on two to three productions, with every effort made to put them on at least one Broadway production. If the production schedule allows for choice, we will work to cater to the individual Fellow’s interests.

As the Fellow, what do I work on when I’m not assistant directing? Am I required to be in the office?

How you spend your time outside of assistant directing is entirely up to you! Of course, we love having our Fellow in the office, and have a desk that is available to the Fellow at all times. As long as it doesn’t interfere with your pre-determined Roundabout assistant directing work or developmental workshops, we encourage Fellows to direct readings, set up meetings with industry professionals, or pursue freelance directing work.

Will my candidacy be affected by whether I apply for one program or both?

No, this choice bears no weight in our selection process.

When will the programs start?

We anticipate having the Fellow and cohort members confirmed by mid-June. The Fellow will then begin working with Roundabout staff to arrange their assisting work for the season. Depending on production schedules, the Fellowship runs 10 – 11 months, and it will likely kick off sometime between mid-August and early September. The RDG cohort will be surveyed about their schedules in order to set the dates of all monthly meetings for the season. The first meeting will take place in September, and the final meeting will take place in August of the following year.

How often does RDG meet? Is attendance mandatory?

All members are expected to attend all monthly meetings. Additional activities will take place throughout the season, and members are encouraged to attend as many as possible.

Do I have to live in New York City to be in these programs?

The Fellow is expected to live and work in New York City throughout the season.

We anticipate all meetings for RDG to take place in person at Roundabout’s midtown Manhattan offices. We advise applicants to assume that their presence will be required on-site in New York on at least a monthly basis. No additional travel stipend is provided, though members may choose to put their professional development fund towards travel.

How many people will be selected?

There will be one Roundabout Directing Fellow.

We expect RDG to have approximately 8-10 members.

How do I know if I’m the right fit for RDG?

The Roundabout Directors Group was made to encourage peer networking and community building among early career directors as well as the growth of each individual director’s knowledge of the industry at large. While this program is not focused on developing craft, directors who are looking to grow their network of colleagues in order to share resources, knowledge, and to learn the inner workings of a large nonprofit institution will find just that.

If I apply for the Fellowship and am not selected, will I automatically be considered for RDG?

No. If not selected for the Fellowship, applicants will need to have also applied to RDG in order to be considered for that program. However, the selected Fellow will have the option to participate in RDG, even if they did not initially apply for the cohort.

Can I apply for the Fellowship if I’ve already been a part of RDG?

Yes! The Fellowship offers different, more individualized opportunities than RDG, and previous cohort members are encouraged to apply.

Can I apply for the Fellowship or RDG if I do not live in the United States?

As the Fellowship is considered employment, you must be authorized to work in the United States. Since both the Fellowship and RDG take place in person in New York City, any international applicants must plan to live in New York for the duration of the program.
