Meet our 2019 Summer Interns!

As the summer comes to an end, we asked our interns to introduce themselves, reflect on their time here at Roundabout, and give some advice to the next generation of RTC interns.
Kelvy Alter, Audience Services Intern
Hometown: Jacksonville Beach, FL College: The University of Florida
Who is your favorite character in a musical or play? Why?
My favorite character in a musical is Eliza Schuyler from Hamilton because she embodies grace, strength, and endurance. I love history and learning more about the powerful Founding Mothers of our county.
What is your favorite thing about working for Roundabout Theatre Company?
My favorite part about working at Roundabout is all of the new friends I am meeting and connecting with. The theatre community is very close and I’m so excited to be a part of it. I love meeting people I will cross paths with again in the future.
What advice would you pass on to the future interns of Roundabout?
I would advise future interns to always be asking questions! Asking questions shows you are interested in what you’re working on and can save you from making mistakes.
Jose Alvanes, Finance Intern
Hometown: Bronx, New York College: Baruch College
Who is your favorite character in a musical or play? Why?
My favorite character in a play is Chris Keller from Arthur Miller’s All My Sons. His morals were tested heavily throughout the play. Nevertheless, he still stuck to his principals despite the consequences.
What is your favorite thing about working for Roundabout Theatre Company?
My favorite thing about working for Roundabout Theatre Company is the experience that I am receiving when it comes to the financial aspects of the theatre industry.
What advice would you pass on to the future interns of Roundabout?
Make sure you take advantage of all the resources that Roundabout has to offer. Roundabout is committed to nurturing individuals in whatever interests they are pursuing. It is essential for interns and apprentices to consume every drop of guidance that Roundabout has to offer.
Kayla Arvelo, On Site- Education Intern
Hometown: Bronx, New York College: Pace University
Who is your favorite character in a musical or play? Why?
Angel from Rent because despite given her circumstances she makes the most out of everything. She is a free and high spirit and her amazing energy was the same throughout the entire show. Also her death was one of the few deaths that had a very high meaning and impact.
What is your favorite thing about working for Roundabout Theatre Company?
How welcoming and friendly the Roundabout staff are. The education department always go above and beyond, and they are absolutely amazing.
What advice would you pass on to the future interns of Roundabout?
Don't be afraid to ask questions and remember this is a learning process. Try to find the takeaway and how you can evolve in every experience you go through.
Zoha Bharwani, Off-Site Education Intern
Hometown: Bloomfield, Michigan College: University of Michigan
Who is your favorite character in a musical or play? Why?
Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird. He’s my favorite book character, and seeing him come alive onstage was phenomenal.
What is your favorite thing about working for Roundabout Theatre Company?
All the amazing people I get to meet! Everyone is involved with so many cool projects and moving parts, and seeing it all come together to make the vision reality is so wonderful.
What advice would you pass on to future interns of Roundabout?
Stay open to every new experience, especially ones that scare you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help setting up even more new opportunities.
Jheameil Bryan, IT Intern
Hometown: Bronx NY College: New York Institute of Technology
Who is your favorite character in a musical or play? Why?
Will Chase as Petruchio/Fred Graham in Kiss Me, Kate because of his banter and jokes all throughout the show.
What is your favorite thing about working for Roundabout Theatre Company?
The day-to-day has so much happening, that there is always something to do. From big to small, I always feel like I am practicing my IT skills.
What advice would you pass on to the future interns of Roundabout?
Take on anything that you can and ask for help whenever you hit a wall. That is exactly what this internship is for and Roundabout is a wonderful place to cultivate that hands-on work experience.
Jennifer Dars, Marketing Intern
Hometown: Somerset, New Jersey College: Rutgers University—New Brunswick
Who is your favorite character in a musical or play? Why?
My favorite character in a play or musical is Elphaba from Wicked because seeing that show is one of my earliest musical theatre memories. I have always admired her because to me, she is the definition of a strong independent women. Elphaba also represents the people who feel misunderstood in the world but she doesn't allow this feeling to keep her from being true to her self.
What is your favorite thing about working for Roundabout Theatre Company?
My favorite part about working at Roundabout is having the chance to work with people who are just as passionate about theatre as I am. Roundabout has also developed a wonderful internship program which has allowed us to meet fellow interns from other arts organizations. This program has helped me to start building my own network of likeminded individuals which has been great!
What advice would you pass on to the future interns of Roundabout?
Roundabout really cares about fostering the next generation of arts administrators, so take advantage of every opportunity you are given while you are here and always ask questions. Don’t be afraid to reach out individuals outside your department if you are interested in learning more about what they do.
Haley Gendell, Management Intern
Hometown: Amesbury, Massachusetts College: Pace University
Who is your favorite character in a musical or play? Why?
Bobby/Bobbi from Company. The character is complicated, incredibly human and has one of the best Sondheim eleven o’clock numbers of all time.
What is your favorite thing about working for Roundabout Theatre Company?
I love feeling like my work makes a difference in such an influential company in the theatre world. Tasks you are given in the office are not busywork but assignments that enable the department to run as successfully and smoothly as possible.
What advice would you pass on to the future interns of Roundabout?
Ask questions! Use this opportunity to learn as much about the theatre world as you can and recognize that your supervisors are here to help you develop in your careers.
Ellie Levine, Artistic Intern
Hometown: Columbus, Ohio College: Northwestern University
Who is your favorite character in a musical or play? Why?
Beverley Bass in Come From Away! I love that she is based on such a strong and inspiring woman. In a musical that is about the experiences of so many people, she stands out as a fiercely determined and kind person.
What is your favorite thing about working for Roundabout Theatre Company?
I love how much the company trusts and depends on interns. I feel like I am learning a lot from being given important tasks. It has also been amazing to get to know other staff members and hear how they came to work at Roundabout. And reading a ton of plays is pretty great as well!
What advice would you pass on to the future interns of Roundabout?
Learn how the organization works as a whole. Ask other interns about the work they are doing. And don’t be afraid to reach out to anyone you want to chat with in the office. Everyone wants to help you learn!
Michelle Tseung, Development Intern
Hometown: Salt Lake City, Utah College: University of Utah
Who is your favorite character in a musical or play? Why?
Eliza Schuyler from Hamilton. She has this incredible strength and goodness that perseveres throughout the show. She’s a character with a lot of heart.
What is your favorite thing about working for Roundabout Theatre Company?
From everyday items like working on projects, to bigger picture items like the mission statement – there is always a presence of support in the Roundabout community.
What advice would you pass on to the future interns of Roundabout?
Take advantage of all the opportunities you’ll have! There is so much to learn.
