Summary:  

The Artistic Fellow will learn about and support the daily essential operations of a nonprofit Artistic team of six, reporting to the Artistic Programs Manager and the Literary Associate. The Fellow will be trained in script and readings coverage, producing of readings and workshops, and various organizational tactics regarding script databases, artist support programs, special events, and assistant work. They will sharpen their administrative, writing, and critical thinking skills. The Artistic Fellow will also assist with The Refocus Project, gaining experience in an institution-wide, multi-department initiative. After completing the Artistic Fellowship, we expect that the Fellow will be ready for a wide variety of positions, such as Artistic roles at any organization, administrative roles at other arts and entertainment organizations, and/or roles in a Literary or Casting office.  

Job Responsibilities:  

55% (~22 hours per week) - Daily Operations of Department  

  • Read play submissions and attend external staged readings of new work  
  • Script coverage – i.e. critically analyze scripts and write short summaries for internal review  
  • Assist with the preparation and producing of Roundabout’s readings and workshops, including day-of support (greeting, set up and break down, etc.)  
  • Assist with payroll and other financial processes (reimbursements, credit card reconciliation)  
  • Assist in the maintenance of Roundabout’s literary database  
  • Assist with the administration of artist support programs: Roundabout Directors Group, the Directing Fellowship and our writer-support program Space Jam   
  • Support the planning and organization of Roundabout’s Opening Nights  
  • Complete administrative tasks that support the day-to-day operations of the Artistic Department as a whole, and, specifically, the Assistant to the Artistic Director  
  • Participate in shadowing experience with the Casting department  


30% (~10 hours per week) – Long term projects  
 

  • Training and mentorship in completing dramaturgical research and writing articles for Roundabout’s UPSTAGE Guides and information sessions  
  • Work towards being the lead contact on the producing of a reading  
  • Support the research, reading, curation and producing process for The Refocus Project  


10% (~16 hours per month) – Mentoring and Professional Development/Training Events 
 

  • Meeting with an interdepartmental mentor once a month  
  • Fall/Spring Summit  
  • Alumni Panel & Events  
  • Meet & Greets with other theatre companies and their workforce program cohorts  
  • Attendance at APAP Conference  


5% (~8 hours per month) – Weekly Seminars and Workshops 
 

  • Meet + Q&A with all Senior Staff at Roundabout  
  • Professional Skills Workshops such as Planning a Season, Production Budgets, Professional Organizations for Arts Administrators, Resume Review & Interview Practice, etc.  

 What You Bring to the Artistic Department:  

  • A desire to learn about the inner workings of an artistic department within a large nonprofit institution  
  • An interest in pursuing a career in arts administration and a passion for supporting new play development processes 
  • Strong communication skills, with an emphasis on the areas of writing and research, and including high proficiency in both verbal and written communication (must be comfortable with picking up the phone, drafting and sending emails, etc.)
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking 
  • Adaptable to and excited about learning organizational methods 
  • Keen attention to detail and an instinct for taking initiative 
  • The ability to work a hybrid schedule – in the office approximately three times per week (though some weeks may require more in-person work). Some weekday nights and weekends for events 
  • Digital literacy and clerical skills (i.e. using office equipment and tools such as computers and document management systems, basic data entry, scheduling meetings) 
  • Must be able to work at a desk for long periods of time 
  • The ability to lift 20 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation (some transport of materials to and from work sites required)
