{"title":"Jack O'Brien","role":"Director","image":"","lede":null,"content":"<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p><strong>JACK O'BRIEN<\/strong> (Director) is a three-time Tony & Drama Desk Award winning director, member of the Theatre Hall of Fame, and author of <em>Jack Be Nimble<\/em>, a memoir published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in 2013. Jack won the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director of a Musical for his 2003 Broadway production of <em>HAIRSPRAY<\/em>. He received the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director of a Play for <em>Henry IV <\/em>and <em>The Coast of Utopia I, II, & III<\/em>. Most recently, Jack directed the Spring 2018 Broadway revival of Rogers & Hammerstein\u2019s <em>Carousel<\/em>, and the Fall 2018 production of Tom Stoppard\u2019s new play <em>The Hard Problem <\/em>at Lincoln Center. Additional Broadway credits include <em>Porgy & Bess <\/em>(Tony & Drama Desk Nom.), <em>Damn Yankees<\/em>, Lillian Hellman\u2019s <em>The Little Foxes<\/em>, <em>The Full Monty <\/em>(Tony Nom. & Drama Desk Winner), Tom Stoppard\u2019s <em>Invention of Love <\/em>(Drama Desk Winner), <em>Dirty Rotten Scoundrels <\/em>(Tony Nom.), <em>Catch Me If You Can<\/em>, <em>Dead Accounts<\/em>, <em>Macbeth<\/em>, It\u2019s Only a Play, <em>The Front Page<\/em>, and <em>Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/em>. Off-Broadway, Jack directed <em>Two Shakespearean Actors <\/em>(Tony Nom.), <em>Hapgood <\/em>(Lucille Lortel Award Winner), and <em>Pride\u2019s Crossing <\/em>\u2013 all at Lincoln Center \u2013 as well as <em>More to Love <\/em>at the O\u2019Neill, Manhattan Theater Club's <em>Labor Day<\/em>, and City Centre Encores! production of <em>St. Louis Woman<\/em>. He has also directed various operas, such as <em>Il Trittico <\/em>(Metropolitan Opera), Mozart's <em>The Magic Flute <\/em>(San Francisco Opera), Puccini\u2019s <em>Tosca <\/em>(Santa Fe Opera), <em>Aida <\/em>and <em>Cosi Fan Tutti <\/em>(Houston Grand Opera).<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Jack\u2019s work as Artistic Director of San Diego\u2019s Old Globe Theatre includes <em>Love & Hours<\/em>, Nora Ephron\u2019s <em>Imaginary Friends<\/em>, <em>Twelfth Night<\/em>, Tom Stoppard\u2019s <em>The Seagull <\/em>(original by Chekov), <em>The Magic Fire<\/em>, <em>The Hostage<\/em>, <em>The Doctor is Out<\/em>, <em>Hamlet<\/em>, <em>Uncle Vanya<\/em>, <em>The Cocktail Hour<\/em>, and he is responsible for creating the Globe\u2019s annual musical <em>How the Grinch Stole Christmas!<\/em>, which boasts a wildly successful transfer to Broadway and beyond.  For PBS\u2019s \u201cAmerican Playhouse\u201d television series, Jack directed <em>An Enemy of the People<\/em>, <em>I Never Sang for My Father<\/em>, <em>All My Sons<\/em>, <em>Painting Churches<\/em>, and Thornton Wilder\u2019s <em>The Skin of Our Teeth<\/em>, which aired live from the stage of the Old Globe. His production of <em>The Good Doctor <\/em>and Broadway revival of <em>Most Happy Fella <\/em>were also produced for PBS, and Jack\u2019s <em>Street Scene <\/em>was televised on \u201cLive from Lincoln Center.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->","website":"","alt":""}
