SAM AND BELLA SPEWACK<\/strong> (Book).<\/strong> Reporters, Sam Spewack and Bella Cohen met while working for their newspapers: Sam, The World; <\/em>Bella, The Call<\/em>. They married, 1922. Sam attended Columbia University, 1919. Bella chronicled early years in autobiography: Streets: A Memoir of the Lower East Side <\/em>(1922), published posthumously (1995, Feminist Press). First play, Solitaire Man, <\/em>1926. Clear all Wires <\/em>(1932) became Leave It to Me! <\/em>(1938), their first collaboration with Cole Porter. Boy Meets Girl <\/em>(1935) inspired by Hollywood adventures. Among some 20 films were: My Favorite Wife <\/em>(1940), Weekend at the Waldorf <\/em>(1945). Kiss Me, Kate <\/em>(1948) won Spewacks the first Tony Award ever given to the book of a musical. Others: Two Blind Mice <\/em>(1949), My 3 Angels <\/em>(1953), Festival <\/em>(1955), Mr. Broadway <\/em>(1957) and Once There Was a Russian <\/em>(1961).<\/p>\r\n","website":"","alt":""}
