Dear friend,

Welcome to the first Broadway revival of John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt: A Parable at the Todd Haimes Theatre, newly renamed for our longtime artistic director and CEO. I am deeply moved to be directing this play, one Todd loved dearly, in this historic theatre that now honors Todd’s impact on Roundabout and our industry. Todd and I often talked about this play, and he loved the idea of bringing it back to Broadway.

In our era of uncertain truths, of seemingly constant confrontation and judgment, Doubt has only gained thematic resonance since its 2004 premiere. A culture of doubt is not a sign of inadequacy; as John Patrick writes in the play’s preface, “doubt requires more courage than conviction does, and more energy; because conviction is a resting place, and doubt is infiniteit is a passionate exercise.” A time of intense doubt can be a time of immense change.

I am thrilled that Liev Schreiber and Zoe Kazan are each returning to Roundabout, and that Amy Ryan and Quincy Tyler Bernstine are joining our family. As a director, I find it such a joy to work with a team of such talented, wonderful actors, designers, and of course, the remarkable John Patrick Shanley.

Thank you for joining us at Doubt. In continuing with Todd’s tradition, I ask that you share your thoughts on this production and our whole season by emailing me at ArtisticOffice@roundabouttheatre.org.

Sincerely,

Scott Ellis
