BEFORE THE SHOW

If you could go back in time and visit multiple generations of your family, what questions would you ask?

For generations, the characters in The Refuge Plays have maintained a boundary between themselves and the world outside. In what ways can you connect to their preservation of that boundary? In what ways have you maintained boundaries with society in your own day-to-day?

If you were able to create a completely safe space for your family, biological or chosen, what would it look like? And if you feel like your loved ones are already safe and secure in their day-to-day lives, what are the factors that create this sense of security?

INTERMISSION

Considering the intimate relationship that the characters have with the land in the play—living essentially off the grid—how do you connect to the land you live on in your day-to-day life?

In Part One, it is mentioned that Joy left the refuge and ventured out into the world. What qualities of the refuge or values of her family might have influecned her choice to return? What choice do you predict Ha-Ha will make: stay, leave and return, leave and not return?

Ghosts can freely interact with the living in the world of the play. In Part Two, the ghosts of Early’s parents talk to Walking Man, their grandson, for the first time. What does this ability allow the characters to achieve or explore that they might not otherwise? How would someone be able to achieve the same thing without talking to the ghost of a loved one?
