Water. Salt. Tomatoes. Sort VHS tapes alphabetically. More water.

In Brighton Beach there’s a lot for Marina to worry about—sparse sales, careless customers, the storm brewing just outside, and the ocean of impossibility of reconciling your past with your present—and on days like today, you have to pick just one.

That’s what she tells Abdur, a passionate teenager who shows up with a petition to Save The Whales, while she and Masha are busy putting down sandbags and boarding up Brighton Video’s windows for the coming storm. As the downpour worsens, the three of them are trapped inside together and have to learn to swim the gulf between them, vast and alive as the Atlantic Ocean. Written by Liba Vaynberg and directed by Lee Sunday Evans, The Blue Parts is a familiar and singular story about what it means to leave the places we call home.

Liba Vaynberg

Playwright

Liba Vaynberg is a first generation American writer and actor. Plays include The Matriarchs (Eugene O’Neill National Playwriting Conference, Civilians R&D, Princess Grace Finalist, Blue Ink Award Finalist), The Gett (Rattlestick, CNPF, Theater Ariel), Round Table (Fault Line/59e59), and Scheiss Book (Best One Woman Show/Backstage Magazine Award at Int’l United Solo Festival). She wrote for Star City, a Cold War thriller on AppleTV+. She is a Sundance Fellow with her original pilot LOUPE, and her film Suite Bergamasque L.75 premiered at Raindance in London. She currently holds commissions from Miami New Drama, Lucille Lortel, and Roundabout. Her acting credits include 4 seasons of New Amsterdam and leading roles in the premieres of Bekah Brunstetter’s The Oregon Trail at WP, Michel Hausmann’s The Golem of Havana at La Mama, and the PBS broadcast of The Soap Myth (opposite Ed Asner). The daughter of Ukrainian and Azerbaijani Jewish refugees, she is bilingual in English and Russian. She studied Molecular Biology at Yale before receiving her MFA at Columbia, so her parents are still wondering why she didn’t become a doctor. libavaynberg.com

Director

Lee Sunday Evans is a two-time Obie Award-winning Director and the Artistic Director of Waterwell. Recent Credits: ORATORIO FOR LIVING THINGS by Heather Christian, world premiere of A WRINKLE IN TIME by Lauren Yee, music and lyrics by Heather Christian, THE FORD/HILL PROJECT which she co-created with Elizabeth Marvel, DANCE NATION by Clare Barron, Waterwell’s THE COURTROOM created with Arian Moayed which premiered in a courtroom in the 2nd Circuit Thurgood Marshall Courthouse, CAUGHT by Christopher Chen and HOME by Geoff Sobelle. She directed the film adaptation of THE COURTROOM which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2022 and has had grassroots screenings around the country. As part of her work at Waterwell, she has partnered with the Council on Foreign Relations, the National Center for Youth Law, Labor Notes, The Amica Center, Dignity Not Detention Coalition and others to create original projects that make robust contributions to their work on public policy, communications, and organizing.
